Symmetry, topology, and phases of matter at non-equilibrium

Dr. Yuji Hirono

Symmetry and topology have been key concepts for our understanding of natural phenomena. In this talk, I will try to illustrate how these concepts are useful in characterizing the phases of matter and constraining their properties. In particular, I will talk about the use of higher-form symmetries, which are a generalized version of symmetries, for the characterization of the phases of QCD matter and other quantum phases such as fracton phases. I will also talk about topological characteristics for identifying removable substructures in complex reaction networks.
